Data buoy located in Monitor National Marine Sanctuary back online

The NOAA data buoy located inside the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary is back online and broadcasting real-time data. Information such as wind speed, water temperature, and wave height can be accessed 24 hours a day via this website.

The data buoy was recovered late last year following damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The replacement of the data buoy means that users such as fishermen and divers now have access to offshore conditions before ever leaving the dock.

Managed by NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, Monitor National Marine Sanctuary was designated in 1975 to protect the wreck of the famed Civil War ironclad USS Monitor, which sank during a storm 16 miles off Cape Hatteras, N.C. in 1862.
