PROMOTING "PONO" FISHING PRACTICES

Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary hosted for the first time the Sanctuary Classic in Hawai'i, a summer-long, fishing and photo competition to promote safe and responsible (pono) fishing practices and perpetuate the transfer of knowledge to sustain our marine resources from one generation to the next. Multiple events that featured hands-on activities about sustainable and traditional fishing practices were offered on the islands of Kaua'i, Maui and O'ahu. Families participated in throw-net demonstrations, barbless hook making, interpretation of spawning cycles, and other activities.

ALPENA: SANCTUARY OF THE GREAT LAKES

Community leaders from Alpena worked with an international marketing consultant to develop a community brand and action plan to better promote the region. "Alpena: Sanctuary of the Great Lakes" is the new branding slogan being used to endorse the area's historic and natural resources, including Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The branding effort highlights Alpena as an outstanding destination for local residents and visitors, a place that creates business opportunities, and a community that creates lasting opportunities for its youth. NOAA staff played an integral role in the development of the branding plan.
