The
Columbus Iselin Personnel and
Partners
From
the moment the R/V Columbus Iselin ran
aground on Looe Key reef, the effort to respond to
the emergency, assess the natural resource
injuries, pursue the damage assessment and legal
case, and plan the restoration has been a
partnership project. Without the strong support of
all those involved, restoring the reef would not
have been possible.
Many
program offices within the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have played key
roles at different points in the process. In
addition to the National Marine Sanctuary Program's
staff in the Florida Keys and at the headquarters
office, NOAA's Damage Assessment and Restoration
Program brought to bear legal, economic, and
biological expertise from the National Ocean
Service (NOS), National Marine Fisheries Service
(NMFS), and the Office of General Counsel. The
State of Florida and the U.S. Coast Guard also were
partners in the effort.
A
comprehensive list of all the participants would be
too long to offer here, but below are a number of
the key individuals without whom this project would
not have been possible. If we have inadvertently
missed any other principal partners, we apologize.
This listing is organized in rough chronological
order from the initial event through the
implementation of restoration.
