Mission Log: July 18, 2006

Monitor National Marine Sanctuary
ARGUS’s mission of photographic imaging was completed late last night. Today we focused on using the ECHO sonar to capture images of the Monitor. The great weather allowed us to explore some other nearby shipwrecks including the Empire Gem, a German U-boat which sank during World War II and two World War I battleships.

We have really lucked out with the weather again today, although the forecast is calling for thunder storms and rain due to the tropical depression that is currently forming just south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The scientists are working to ensure that the top priority data from ARGUS and ECHO is captured before the bad weather makes its way to us.
It’s amazing how much activity is going on aboard the research vessel Endeavor at any time—day or night. Everyone has a set shift schedule, some of them being from midnight to 4 a.m. There’s always someone working and someone sleeping.
