On July 15-20, a team of researchers conducted a major mapping expedition to the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, the shipwreck site of the USS Monitor. The expedition collected high-resolution digital still and video imagery that will be used to generate a high quality photomosaic of one of the greatest American technological innovations of the 19th century.
The goals of this expedition are to use the optical images to generate a digital photographic mosaic of the ship’s hull and surrounding wreckage.
This is a collaborative effort between the Institute for Exploration in Mystic, Connecticut and NOAA National Marine Sanctuary Program.
The expedition will collect high-resolution digital still and video imagery that will be used to generate a high quality photomosaic of the entire wreck site.
Researchers aboard the research vessel Endeavor will use IFE’s robotic vehicle systems ARGUS and LITTLE HERCULES as the primary tools for this expedition. In addition, the expedition will use a satellite telecommunication link to broadcast streaming video feeds and even answer questions from shore in real time!
Expedition Schedule
July 15-16: Endeavor departs the University of Rhode Island en route to the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary
July 17-19: ARGUS and LITTLE HERCULES at work in the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. 15-minute short live broadcasts July 17 and 18 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
July 19: Live Broadcast from the Endeavor at 2 p.m. Talk live with the crew!
July 19-20: Endeavor departs Monitor NMS en route to Nauticus, The National Maritime Center in Norfolk, Va.
July 21: Port Call at Nauticus, The National Maritime Center in Norfolk, Va.
